All hail the queen. |
Still, not everyone is feeling the love for Alana and her cahraaaayzee family. This article states that Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is "an unintentional reality show documentary demonstrating what happens when the jobs go away, and there is little way to make an honest living... You see social dysfunction, teenage moms, semi-employed men who come and go... moms who actually think kiddy beauty pageants are their ticket out of poverty — if only their child can win the jackpot."
When viewing the Thompson family from a standpoint of cultural relativism, they may seem extremely taboo; after all, a life of washing one's hair in the kitchen sink, eating cheese balls for breakfast, and bobbing for pig's feet at the Redneck Games ins't one that the average American lives every day. But do we seriously view this family as a representation of the lower class, or do we simply watch looking to be entertained, not taking away anything besides joy at seeing Alana frolick around with her pet pig, Glitzy?
Next time you indulge in the guilty pleasure of reality television, perhaps by watching Honey Boo Boo in action, keep in mind that what you're seeing could subconsciously be warping your views on social class.
Okay first off, I loved all of your slang comments regarding this family! I think a combination of their own kind of language and "different" ways have led me to be in a case of ethnocentrism. These words are very foreign to me, and I don't have nicknames for my family members such as Pumpkin or Chubbs. My sister's name is Samantha and the wildest nickname I have for her is "Sam". Honey Boo Boo's family and their norms are very different from my family and I am lead to negatively judge their values because of this. I loved this post!
ReplyDeleteThe shows these days have gotten worse and worse since the time my parents were growing up. What message does this show to children? It is telling children that they can act like spoiled brats to get what they want. Honey Boo Boo is a disgrace to society. Although many people who are wealthy like to spoil their children and let them do things they should not, the majority of America would not let their children act this way. I know for a fact that when I have children I will never let my child get to the point that they will scream and yell until they get what they want. Yes, I will spoil my children and so will my parents but to a certain extent. For the rest of Alana's life she will have this mindset that she always gets what she wants because she was raised in this particular way. By having shows like these it puts ideas into new parents minds. It only results in setting the child up to fail in life. If a child is so use to getting everything they want, then what will happen when they go out into the real world and they do not get the job they want? What will they do then? Mommy and daddy will not be able to bail them out of that situation.
